Designing payroll software people actually trust

Attenzo Team · May 2, 2026 · 5 min read

Nothing erodes trust in workplace software faster than a payroll error. Someone's rent depends on that number being right, which means the bar for 'good enough' is much higher here than almost anywhere else in the product.

Traceability over trust

Every payroll run in Attenzo is fully auditable before it's finalized — every line item traces back to specific attendance records within the pay period: regular minutes worked, overtime minutes, and the employee's configured hourly rate, multiplied out transparently rather than produced by an opaque calculation nobody can double-check.

  • Employees without a configured hourly rate are skipped entirely when a run generates, not silently defaulted to zero pay — a deliberate choice to fail loudly (an admin notices someone's missing) rather than quietly (someone gets a $0 payslip and finds out at the worst possible time).
  • The overtime multiplier, standard workday length, and pay period are all organization-level settings, not hardcoded assumptions — because 'a day' and 'overtime' don't mean the same thing everywhere.

We also made cancellation and correction first-class flows, not admin-only escape hatches. If a run looks wrong, any authorized manager can pause it before it's finalized — the same instinct as everywhere else in the product: make it easy to catch a mistake before it becomes a payslip in someone's inbox, rather than easy to generate a number quickly and hope it's right.
